Maple & Willow's Story

Maple and Willow made their debut at Stone Zoo in August. This special pair were in need of a home, which Stone Zoo was happy to provide. In November 2023, the tiny orphaned cubs were found wandering alone near Burlingame, California, after their mother was fatally hit by a car. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife rescued the young cubs and brought them to the Oakland Zoo’s veterinary hospital for expert care. At the time, it was estimated that the cubs were 6-10 weeks old. Once old enough, Maple and Willow moved to Oakland’s “head-start” habitat while they awaited their forever home. While we don’t know their exact birthdate, we are celebrating their first year which was full of milestones. Both are thriving at Stone Zoo’s Treasures of the Sierra Madre habitat, and enjoy regular enrichment and several climbing structures designed just for them.
