Experience Butterfly Oasis at Stone Zoo

Take a moment to stop and smell the flowers, and connect closely with nature at the new Butterfly Oasis filled with delicate, fluttering butterflies, opening Saturday, July 27 at Stone Zoo.

At Butterfly Oasis, generously made possible by StonehamBank, guests of all ages will wander along a winding path displaying a water feature and sculptural palm trees all within the 20-foot-high geodesic dome. As guests explore the space, they will be delighted by a range of butterfly species including monarchs, white peacocks and red admirals. The space will also house an eclosion box for guests to learn about the lifecycle of butterflies and watch as they emerge from their chrysalises.

“We’re excited to sponsor the Butterfly Oasis at Stone Zoo. This exhibit reflects our commitment to supporting community enrichment and providing memorable experiences for all,” said Edward F. Doherty, Jr., President and CEO of StonehamBank.

Butterfly Oasis will further introduce guests to the importance of pollinators in healthy ecosystems and ways that we can help them thrive. The space is planted with native and tropical pollinator plants, which will provide nectar for the butterflies. This vibrant new attraction seamlessly fits in with the Caribbean Coast, home to the bright Caribbean flamingo flock, colorful macaws and Jamaican iguanas.

“We are incredibly grateful to StonehamBank for generously supporting this project, which will enable us to educate guests about the role some of the smallest creatures play in healthy ecosystems. Through this immersive new experience, we hope that guests will develop a deeper understanding of the impact we can all have in protecting wildlife and habitats now and in the future,” said John Linehan, President and CEO of Zoo New England.

In celebration of the opening of Butterfly Oasis, on Saturday, July 27, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, there will be fun-filled family activities throughout the day including butterfly-themed arts and craft stations. Stop by the education and conservation tables to learn more about the role of pollinators in healthy ecosystems, and participate in games and activities. Don’t miss out on a photo op with a butterfly-themed stilt walker.

As a seasonal habitat, Butterfly Oasis is open daily through Oct. 14, 2024, weather permitting. Butterfly Oasis is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 5:30 p.m. weekends.
