Arboretum
Conservation is rooted in everything we do. Beyond the incredible animals that call Franklin Park Zoo home, the Zoo is also a Level II accredited arboretum filled with living history, rare species and towering trees that help support healthy ecosystems.
As you explore, look up! You’ll find more than 850 trees and shrubs representing over 160 species and cultivars from around the world, including trees that have stood here for more than 100 years.
Keep an eye out for:
- Historic elm trees more than 100 years old, including a row near the Zebra Entrance that dates back to Frederick Law Olmsted’s original design for Franklin Park.
- Northern red oaks, which provide food and habitat for hundreds of species of native butterflies and moths.
- Ginkgo biloba trees, living representatives of an ancient plant lineage that dates back more than 200 million years—before dinosaurs roamed the Earth!
- Native blueberries, magnolias and other plants blooming throughout the Zoo’s grounds.
- Coming soon: The historic Rock Garden is being restored with plants including blueberries, winter heaths, and other species that will bring new life to this unique space.
